Is There a Difference Between a Male and a Female Photographer?

So I read this article today and found it very interesting how different people view female and male Photographers... Read on below and tell me your thoughts.

Ever since I started my career as an Israeli fashion and advertising photographer I have been asked this question. Each time I am interviewed about my fashion and advertising photography work, this is the main topic. And I also ask myself sometimes, if my career would have been different if I were a male and not a female photographer.

My answer keeps changing all the time and I still feel that I have not reached a final conclusion yet.

When I started as a professional photographer in the late 80’s, I insisted that there is no difference between a male and a female photographer. Nevertheless, the first time I was interviewed for an exhibition at the Israel Museum, I admitted that there were very few active female photographers in Israel. But at that time there weren’t many freelance or self-employed women in other business areas in general.

I was and still am very determined, so I have always been offered big campaigns and complex productions. I have always felt that I have more physical strength and stamina than my male colleagues. I am really not a giant, but especially in the beginning of my career, it was my will power and strong work ethics that made me work 20 hours non-stop and still be precise in my work. I do not recommend working 20 hours in a row to anyone, but it does happen.

And along the way, my two daughters were born. During the first pregnancy I worked all the way through to the day I gave birth, I actually had to ring up a client and cancel a shoot to go to the hospital instead. During the second pregnancy my belly was already much bigger one month before I was due, and I could hardly breathe, and so I slowed down and let myself rest. After each birth it took me about three weeks to return to work.

I did it because I love my work, it is very important to me to creatively express myself and keep a mental balance, but also because of my personal ambitions. I simply find it difficult to define myself without my work. I was breastfeeding each one of my daughters for nine months using all kinds of tricks, while I was back at my studio full time, available for any kind of project. I am not recommending this formula as the perfect thing for everyone; it was simply my own way.

Back then I started thinking that there is a difference between male and female photographers after all.

As a matter of fact, there are many male and few females photographers. So I started thinking about our differences…

Firstly, we have a different mentality.

Secondly, few women actually feel that they deserve success, few women really fight for their dreams and too many of us still define themselves through managing their homes and families.

Thirdly, there are specific differences that are unique to the field of photography. Female photographers are much more willing to experiment for the sake of art, for their own personal process or just out of curiosity and the sake of trying something new.

But women are less focused on targets; therefore they are often perceived as being less serious. Hence the big projects are often given to a male colleague of the same level. In Israel for example, you will find more feminine presence in magazine work and less in the commercial field, which is much better paid.

This is because women refer to sex in a different way. So in the commercial industry, whose main message is sex, the feminine point of view is less popular with advertising agencies and fashion manufacturers simply because it is more complex and less one-dimensional.

But today, in the year 2008, the point of view of the fashion industry has broadened and many campaigns give diverse messages and not just the “be pretty and show a sexy face” message. There is a bigger variety of photographers out there, even though the main message has remained the good old heterosexual way, and for this purpose a male photographer with a male eye will still regularly be preferred over a female one.

Another issue is the technical issue – many girls tend to be techno phobic, some even regard it as some sort of chic. Unfortunately, this makes society regard women as technically incompetent.

I find it obvious that if a female photographer arrives at a shoot, she must be technically minded in one way or the other, since photography is a very technical process in itself and one needs to be familiar with different kind of tools.

But even today when I am working on a big production, being in charge of a lot of people, someone always comes up to my assistant to ask him if he is the photographer…It always amuses me, but it shows what most people really think: After all photography is a business for men.

Finally, networking is really important and most networks are still male driven. This is especially true for Israel where many contacts are from the time in the army… Feminine networks are still very young, but they are growing.

Attached is a link to an interview conducted with GO Magazine about female photographers…

Have a read what I have to say… but don’t be surprised if I change my mind about this issue again.

Photo Shoot with Gators? Are you serious?

Ok so I was booked by an aspiring model to do a photo shoot on Dec. 09 2008 Tuesday - which don't sound bad right? Well it's not the photo shoot that I'm concerned about it's the location of this so said photo shoot... Grassy Water Reservation in West Palm Beach.
First concern was the fact that there is no way in the world that I'm driving up there - so I'm going to drive to the Tri Rail Station - and catch the train to West Palm and the model will be picking me up from that location and driving the the desired shoot location. Ok handled that issue.

My Second Concern was that the model writes me and ask me to bring waterproof boots, wtf? lmao - so I reply "umm why" she states "because you might get wet" wtf? are you kidding me - Dee get wet on a photo shoot? No not even when I go to do a beach to do a shoot lol. So I told her " I'm good sweetie I have a zoom lens that will handle the job you can get in the water all you want, but not me... lol

Now this is when things took a turn for the worst my third concern is that fact that I did some research on the website of this location and the shit has gators - naw yall aint hear me - fucking GATORS like big ass ones too - WTF? Picture this lmao - her in a hot sexy pose in the water - me far away because I got that zoom lens remember? lol - and I see a Gator approching - maybe i'm making a big deal out it - but the fact of the matter is I have a major issue with someone being hurt on one of my photo shoots... like how do you handle something like that? IDK I mean we talking about alligators - and I wonder what else is out at this Reservation... But being a photographer that's willing to take the risk to create an awesome images yo boy is going to do the dam thing and make it work. Check back for the images tomorrow lol... if I make it back - if not - I'm Gator food...

What to Know Before you Shoot with any Photographer

UNDERSTANDING YOUR WRIGHTS
If you think you have found the "right photographer," you will want a copy of the written Release form agreement. Unless you sign a written release agreement at the outset, the probability of your having an amicable conclusion to your relationship is zero. Ask for a copy of the release form agreement. As with all documents, make sure that you understand it fully before you sign it. No reputable Photographer will pressure you to shoot with out signing a release form agreement on the spot. Be sure to read and understand your legal rights are.

SELECTING A PHOTOGRAPHER
When contacting a Photographer, make sure he or she has references and proof of past work. Don't be fooled by amateur photographers that give Claims of great photography and how much better it is to shoot with them. When selecting or choosing a photographer for your modeling needs make sure you know more about the person taking your pictures. Be sure the work the photographer did for the client is similar to what you need and be sure also that the work was performed in the last 6 months to a year (this business changes too fast and sporadic in modeling). Always ask the Photographer for at least two client-references you can call. This is a perfectly reasonable request and any photographer who has a problem with this should be your cue to exit.

KNOWING THE TYPE OF MODELING YOU WANT TO DO
A Photographer is not much different than choosing the right professional to assist you with other needs that you might have. Your goal should be to find a photographer with the best qualifications, experience and knowledge to meet your modeling needs. Like a Painting artist, many photographers concentrate their practices in specific areas. Just as you would not consult with an artist to take a picture of your self, you should not select a photographer who is not qualified to handle your photography needs. Many Photographers stick to certain type shooting and one type of style who can handle a wide variety of modeling. Your objective should be to find a photographer with the most experience with the type of modeling you want to do. Also ask for pictures of current models they have taken pictures of to get a feel of what the photographer is offering you. If you do not feel computable with some pictures you see, ask the photographer if he or she will requires those types of pictures out of you. In many cases if you don't feel like you want to pose in that style you have a right to refuse to shoot with that person if they insist to shoot you in that manner. Always read all release forms before signing them prior to signing them. As one photographer might bring you up in the modeling business, so will another one might bring you down. Amateur photographers are a good way to get free photos but also a way to get scammed or even worse, bad publicity that could bring you down in the modeling business.

There are a lot of fakes on here so please make sure to watch your back. Don't listen to fake promises, fast talking, untrustworthy individuals that claim to have an up and up in the so call game of Entertainment... Look for the signs and keep you eyes wide open.

So you want to be a model? Read and Learn!

"Images in this post were not taken by me" I could not find the photographer of these images to give proper credit to...

The world of high fashion, fantastic clothes, fabulous locations, and celebrity parties. Actually modelling is all about hard work, and often the right attitude. If you think you could be the next Naomi Campbell, or Alex Wek, then read more below for a guide to becoming a model.

If high fashion is not your game, there are other agencies specialising in specific body parts (hands, feet etc), petite and plus size.

Before you start, take a good look at yourself; be realistic! If your not, the model agency representatives will be. Be prepared for rejection, there will be lots more castings, and above all work hard.

Getting Started

Flip through magazines, watch fashion show reports
study and practice being a model by working on their expressions, posing, runway walking, hair styling, make up, working in front of a camera, and how the business works.

Don't start paying for a full portfolio to be taken. This will be expensive and may lead nowhere. Take a few simple shots of yourself, and contact an agency for further advice.

Modeling schools, model searches, internet listing services, modeling contests and conventions, will take money from anyone who decides to participate. These experiences rarely lead to serious modeling work.

Don't be fooled by just anyone saying they are a 'model scout', get a business card, and call the office.

Contact a few agencies and find out when they can see new talent. Most 'fashion' agencies are constantly looking for new faces.
Caribbean London Once you have made contact with an agency, try not to change your look too dramatically whilst creating your new portfolio, unless they request it specifically.

Make sure you keep a positive attitude, it is a hard business, and nobody wants to work with a difficult model.

Upcoming Photo Shoots

So I have a few upcoming photo shoots on my list that are major good looks for me.

1) Allie Incredible from www.Alliexxx.net - we should be shooting this month sometime. And once I have the pictures I will upload them to my blog.

Photo Shoot with Planet Marz Ent.

So I did a Photo Shoot with the Boyz from Planet Mars Ent... From a photographers perspective - I'm going to have to say that these guys came to create an image for themselves...

Them boys from PME (Planet Marz Entertainment) hired me to
create a look for them that follows there creative side. As a photographer I had to look at things in a way that would allow both me and the client to have an end result that we would be 100% happy with. So after listening to there music and getting a good feel for what type of guys there were - it was set. School Boy Prep look in an Urban setting. So I had to use one of my locations that would offer that...
